Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) are diseases spread by intimate sexual contact, and are not only common, but are actually increasing in people who have sex with more than one partner, especially in the 16 to 24 age group. Using a condom correctly to practicing safe sex can prevent the commonest infection of chlamydia and also HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis, however this may not protect against genital herpes and genital warts. Sexually transmitted diseases can remain symptom free for long periods of time, but they are still doing damage to the body, and can be bad enough to stop women being able to have children.
