Omega-3 Supplements For Children

Omega-3 fish oils are essential for brain development in children, and are sadly lacking in most children's diets. The Durham Trial used omega-3 supplements with great success to improve the concentration and behaviour of some children at school, with an increase in their level of achievement. This raised great interest when it was publicised on TV, and there are now several omega-3 fish oil supplements available specially for children, with a range of flavours to choose from, and none of the fishy taste.

What Are Omegs-3 Supplements?

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of polyunsaturated long chain fatty acids which are essential for body and brain health, but which the body cannot make for itself, and are needed as part of a healthy diet. They are structurally different from the Omega-6 essential fatty acids, and the body cannot convert one into the other. Omega-3 fatty acids are lacking in the average diet and this is causing health problems.

How Can Omega-3 Supplements Help Children?

Omega-3 fish oil supplements have become popular for children, as it is now realised that omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain function and development during pregnancy for the unborn child, during childhood and teenage development, and also during adult life.

Low levels of Omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with various development and behaviour disorders in children including ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), dyslexia, dyspraxia and autism.

The Durham Trial
has been widely reported where significant improvements were obtained in concentration and behaviour in children leading to improved school results by using the omega-3 supplement Eye Q. The initial results were so encouraging that the Durham Trial was extended, and now includes pre-school children from nursery school, as well as primary and secondary school children. In all age groups an improvement in concentration and behaviour was seen, as well as improvements in language development and impulsive behaviour. Improvement was also seen in particularly disruptive children. Overall this lead to a significant improvement in school tests and results.
