Clotrimazole Pessary 500mg (1 Pessary) [P]
Clotrimazole Pessary 500mg
You are suffering from a commonly occurring health problem: an infection of the vagina or surrounding external area. This infection is caused mostly by thrush, and sometimes also by other infective agents, e.g. trichomonads or bacteria.
Transmission of thrush usually occurs through intestinal excretions and personal contact. In most cases such a fungal infection is not dangerous, but the accompanying symptoms are unhygienic and unpleasant.
The common possible symptoms are:
- itching of the vagina and surrounding area (the vulva)
- redness and swelling of the tissues of the vagina and vulva
- soreness of the vagina
- a white non-smelling discharge from the vagina.
Not everybody who has thrush will have all of these symptoms. You may have only one of these.
Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets are used to treat fungal infections of the vagina, known as thrush.
Treatment consists of just one Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablet, which remains effective for 3 days. After just 1-2 days most of the obvious symptoms of the infection, above all the itching, will disappear. That does not mean, however, that all of the infective agent has been eliminated, and occasionally further treatment may be needed.
Substitution: We try to use the same manufacturer for each generic product, but we will substitute equivalent products from another manufacturer if there is a supply problem.
Clotrimazole Pessary Directions:
Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor please follow these guidelines, otherwise Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets cannot act in the right way.
The treatment consists of only one tablet, which should be inserted at night before going to sleep.
As a matter of practicality the treatment should not be started during menstruation, or should be completed before its onset.
How long should you use Clotrimazole Pessary?
Each course of therapy consists of just one Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablet.
If the external symptoms of the disease, e.g. discharge or itching, have not completely subsided within three days of using the tablet, consult your doctor who may want you to repeat the treatment.
In case of accidental swallowing: Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets are for external use and should be used only in the vagina. If you have inadvertently swallowed the vaginal tablet you must get in touch with your doctor immediately or contact the accident and emergency department of your nearest hospital.
Each Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablet contains 500 mg of the active ingredient:
- Clotrimazole
Clotrimazole is one of a group of medicines called imidazoles, which work by killing the fungus causing the symptoms.
The other ingredients are lactose, adipic acid, pregelatinised maize starch, sodium hydrogen carbonate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, maize starch, stearic acid, colloidal silicon dioxide and polysorbate 80.
Before using Clotrimazole Pessary:
You must not use Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets if you know that you are hypersensitive, i.e. have ever had an allergic reaction, to clotrimazole or any of the other ingredients.
As a precaution you should not use Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets during early pregnancy. At any other time during pregnancy treatment should be carried out only after consulting your doctor and without using an applicator.
You should see your doctor before using Clotrimazole Vaginal Tablets:
- If you are under 16 years old, over 60 years old or are suffering from a fungal disease for the first time.
- If you or your partner have ever had a sexually transmitted disease.
- If you have had more than two infections in the last six months.
Take other medicines:
Clotrimazole reduces the effectiveness of other drugs used for the treatment of fungal diseases, such as amphotericin and other polyene antibiotics (e.g. nystatin). This also applies to recently taken medicine. If you are not sure whether this will affect you ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Can Clotrimazole Pessary harm you?
Medicines can cause unwanted side effects in a few people. Rarely patients may experience local mild burning or irritation immediately after applying the tablet. Very rarely the patient may find this irritation intolerable and stop treatment. Hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions may occur.
The side effects are very similar to the symptoms of thrush. If the burning, irritation or swelling gets worse see your doctor as soon as possible. If you experience any side effects not mentioned here please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Important: Combined use with cream/vaginal cream
If your doctor has prescribed vaginal tablets and cream/vaginal cream for you, the cream/vaginal cream should be applied to the labia and surrounding areas. Cream/vaginal cream is also suitable for concurrent treatment of a yeast infection of the glans and foreskin of your partner's penis (candida balanitis).
Ask your doctor if your partner should be treated prophylactically with cream/vaginal cream. In this case, the cream/vaginal cream should be applied to the glans and foreskin 2-3 times daily.
Unless your doctor advises against it, you may continue to have sexual intercourse during the treatment period.
Remember: This medicine is for you. It has been recommended by your doctor or pharmacist for the treatment of your symptoms. Never give it to someone else, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
Additional things you can do for your health:
Personal hygiene is very important. First of all you should wash your hands before and after going to the toilet. After urinating, wipe carefully with toilet tissue. Occasionally stools may contain infective agents. To avoid their contact with the vagina you should always wipe the toilet tissue from front to back.
Flannels, hand towels and underwear should be changed daily. Do not wear underwear made of synthetics, or tight fitting pants. Avoid wearing tights, nylon knickers and close fitting jeans too often. These provide warm and airless conditions which help the thrush fungus to grow.
Wash daily, but use simple bland soaps, not heavily scented or medicated ones. Do not scrub hard with sponges or flannels, and avoid hot baths with strong perfumed oils or disinfectants. The most soothing bath to have, if you have thrush, is a warm one with salt in it.
